Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer. Acceptance of Apple Pay is dependent on each individual store. While some Michaels stores accept Apple Pay, the majority do not.
Based on our research, it seems that around 30% of Michaels stores accept Apple Pay in 2022. Adoption of Apple Pay seems to be growing amongst Michaels stores, so it is expected that this number will continue to rise in the coming years, particularly if usage of Apple Pay continues to grow among consumers.
So why the slow rollout? Mobile payment options such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are based on something called NFC technology, which is not supported at all registers.
How To Know If Your Local Michaels Accepts Apple Pay
There are two simple ways to find out whether your local Michaels store accepts Apple Pay or not.
Apple Maps
The first is to use Apple Maps, which comes with every iPhone and iPad. Here are the instructions:
- Open your ‘Maps’ app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Type ‘Michaels’ into the search bar. If you have location services off, you should also type in your city to ensure you’re finding the correct store.
- Click on the Michaels store you intend to shop at.
- Scroll down past the hours, address and phone number. There is a section called ‘Useful To Know’. If the Apple Pay logo appears in this section, then the store accepts Apple Pay. If the Apple Pay logo is missing, then there is a chance that the store does not yet accept Apple Pay.

Note that just because the Apple Pay logo is missing, does not necessarily mean that it is not accepted at the store. There is a chance that the app simply has not updated yet.
Call The Store
When in doubt, the best thing you can do to be absolutely certain is to call your local Michaels store and ask – their associates will be happy to check for you.
Does Michaels Take Apple Pay Online?
I went to Michaels.com using Safari on my iPhone, and added some things to my cart, then attempted to check out.
After filling in my information and getting to the payment options section, it appears that Apple Pay is not accepted as a payment option.
Instead, your options are a credit card, a Michaels gift card, or PayPal. I was also given an option to redeem Michaels Rewards vouchers (though I don’t have any at the time of testing.)
Does The Michaels App Accept Apple Pay?
Similarly to Michaels.com, the ‘Michaels Stores’ app does not seem to accept Apple Pay either.
Just like the website, the app allows you to choose from a credit card, Michaels gift card, and PayPal.
That being said, the Michaels app provided a smoother checkout experience and made it much easier to browse their website, so it is worth downloading if you shop at Michaels regularly. The app also encourages you to select your local Michaels store for additional bonuses and offers.
What Payment Methods Does Michaels Accept?
As discussed earlier, some Michaels stores accept Apple Pay. However, they also accept:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- Discover
- Most major credit cards
- Most major debit cards
- Michaels gift cards
- PayPal (online / app)
- Cash
Michaels does NOT accept checks, drafts, or money orders for online orders, including through their app.
Even if your local store claims to support Apple Pay, it is still wise to bring a back up payment option just in case.
