Can You Pin Someone On Instagram DMs? If So, How?

Are you looking to pin someone to the top of your Instagram DMs, or even pin specific messages?

While this feature is available on other social media apps, it can be difficult to figure out how to do it on Instagram.

So, does Instagram allow you to pin people or messages within DMs and if so, how do you do it?

In this article, I’ll cover everything that you need to know!

Can You Pin People’s Direct Messages On Instagram?

Instagram App

Unfortunately, Instagram does not currently allow you to pin someone to the top of your DMs, nor can you pin specific messages.

However, they do allow you to move specific conversations to a separate folder, which can help you keep them organized. Although it requires you to go to a separate page, it effectively achieves the same thing that pinning them would – that is, allowing you to quickly access the message threads that are most important to you.

So, in just a moment, I’ll show you how to ‘flag’ messages so they end up in a separate section, allowing you to quickly find your most important contacts. I’ll also be covering whether or not Instagram is likely to introduce message pinning in the future.

So, keep reading to learn more!

How To Flag Messages On Instagram

Flag Message Instagram

Thankfully, flagging a conversation on Instagram is easy.

To flag a message on Instagram, follow these steps:

  1. Open Instagram and navigate to your DMs.
  2. Open the message thread that you want to flag.
  3. Tap the icon in the top-right corner that looks like a tag. It should be located next to the audio and video call buttons.
  4. Under the ‘Add a label’ box, tap on ‘Flag.’ If you have an Instagram Business account, you may have other options available, such as ‘Booked’, ‘Ordered’, ‘Paid’, and ‘Shipped.’ Any one of these are also okay to use.
  5. Tap on the blue ‘Save’ button on the bottom of the screen.

Now, you’ll notice that the message thread as an orange flag on the corner of it. But how do you make it so you only see your flagged conversations?

This is pretty easy as well!

Filter Flagged Message Instagram

To display all of your flagged conversations, simply follow these steps:

  1. Tap on the ‘Filter’ button next to the search bar at the top of your DMs.
  2. Tap on ‘Flagged’, or whatever option you chose in the last section.
  3. Wait for the screen to reload.

You should now see a list of all of the conversations you flagged, while the others will be temporarily hidden. You can restore them by tapping the X next to ‘Flagged’ underneath the search bar.

Pretty neat!

Will Instagram Allow Pinning In The Future?

Although flagging messages lets you find certain contacts quickly, it is far from an ideal solution.

So, is Instagram likely to introduce traditional pinning in the future?

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem likely.

Instagram has not announced any intention of adding message nor contact pinning, likely because there isn’t enough demand for it at the moment.

Instagram already shows the people you’ve talked with most recently first, so chances are your most important contacts are already near the top.

Even if your account receives a lot of direct messages, you can still search for specific people using the search bar at the top of your DMs page.

So, they may believe that message or contact pinning simply isn’t necessary at this time.

Conclusion

Although Instagram doesn’t support pinning directly, flagging specific conversations can be a great workaround.

By flagging conversations, you can essentially filter your DMS down into different categories, almost as if these people were in a separate folder.

Of course, if pinning is important to you, I’d love to hear more about why and how you’d use it! Who knows, maybe someone from Instagram will read it as well?
