Chevron is one of the largest companies in the world, and the 2nd largest oil company in the U.S – only behind ExxonMobil.
With over 5,000 gas stations across the United States, this is quite a popular gas station to refuel your car and stock up on some much needed snacks while traveling.
But does Chevron take EBT, SNAP or food stamps? Let’s investigate!
Does Chevron Take EBT?
The short answer is this – Chevron does in fact take EBT, but only for certain food and drink items. Your EBT card cannot be used to purchase gasoline, or other items for your car.
This is a limitation of EBT itself, not due to any specific policy by Chevron. In fact, there aren’t any gas stations that allow you to use your EBT card for fuel.
To make matters worse, there are limitations on what kind of food can and cannot be purchased by EBT. To make things easier, we’ve assembled a list of items that can be purchased at Chevron with EBT cards:
- Meat, poultry and seeds.
- Pre-packaged snacks, as long as they aren’t prepared at the store
- Bread, cereal, and other grain items
- Candy, ice cream, and other pre-packaged, non-prepared desserts
- Cold beverages (including soda and certain energy drinks.)
- Cold drinks, such as slushies or iced coffee
- Fruits, vegetables, and produce
Although this should cover the majority of food items inside the Chevron stores, there are in fact some food and drink items that you cannot purchase with EBT. Here are a few examples of ineligible items:
- Hot meals / drinks, including coffee
- Pet food
- Alcoholic beverages
- Supplements
- Gasoline, and other items for your car
How To Use Your EBT Card At Chevron
Before you head to the register, you should make note of which items in your order can be covered by EBT, and which ones cannot.
Then, pay for your EBT items first, using your EBT card as if it were any other credit or debit card.
If you also have non-EBT items in your order, these will need to be split into a separate transaction, and can be paid for immediately after your EBT purchase using a different payment method.
Payment Methods Accepted At Chevron
Chevron accepts a wide variety of payment methods, in addition to EBT and food stamps. Here is a list of payment methods accepted at Chevron gas stations:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- Discover
- Venmo (in the Chevron app)
- PayPal (in the Chevron app)
- Apple Pay
- Chevron / Texaco gift card
- Samsung Pay
- Google Pay
- Most major debit cards
- Most major credit cards
- Cash
Note that Chevron also offers their own credit card, the Techron Advantage card, which offers 3-8 cents back per gallon depending on what type of fuel you buy at the pump.
There are also credit cards available that offer up to 5% cash back on gasoline purchases, which may be a better deal.
Can You Use Your EBT Card At Chevron Gas Pumps?
Unfortunately, you cannot use your EBT card to purchase gasoline – whether you go inside the convenience store to pay, or you use Chevron’s mobile app.
Quite simply, your EBT card will not be accepted, and you will be forced to pay with an alternative payment method. Therefore, you should make sure that you have one available upon visiting a Chevron gas station.
You can find a list of alternative payment methods for Chevron above.
Other Gas Stations That Take EBT Cards
Looking to find out who else takes EBT? Here is a list of other gas stations that also take EBT cards and SNAP.
Note that this list is not complete, but it should provide a decent list of alternatives:
Note that some of these gas stations are part of a franchise. Individual gas stations may not accept EBT, even if the majority of the others do.
Therefore, you may wish to contact the store ahead of time to inquire about this.
Conclusion
Does Chevron take EBT? Absolutely! As long as you’re using your EBT card to purchase qualifying food or drink items, you shouldn’t run into any problems.
While you can’t buy gas with EBT (at any gas station), feel free to use your benefits to stock up some snacks during your next road trip.
