What Does The Phone Icon Mean On Discord?
Generally speaking, the phone icon next to someone’s name or profile picture means that they are accessing Discord on mobile.
Discord currently has apps for both iPhone and Android, making it an incredibly popular choice to keep in touch with server members while on the go.
While Discord starting out primarily as a desktop app for gamers, it has blossomed into a full chatroom and community management software. So, it makes sense people would want to use it even when they’re away from their PCs.
However, the phone icon can mean different things depending on its color and placement. So, let’s look at each one of them in more detail!
What Does The Green Phone Icon Mean On Discord?
The most common phone icon you’ll see on Discord is the green phone icon.
Put simply, this means that the person is currently online and active, and is using Discord on their cell phone.
After a certain period of time away from the app, the phone icon will no longer be green, and may change to yellow, and then gray, indicating they’re offline.
If it’s green however, they are around right now, and are likely to respond if you send them a message. So, don’t hesitate to talk with them!
What Does The Yellow / Orange Phone Icon Mean On Discord?
If the phone icon is yellow or orange, this means that they are currently idle.
This works just like the normal dot would if they were on desktop. If it’s green, they’re online. If it’s yellow, they’re still technically online, but haven’t shown any activity for a period of time.
Typically, this time period is between 5 and 10 minutes.
If you send somebody a message while they are idle, they may still respond if they return to their device, though there may be a delay.
Often times, people go idle when they get up to do something, such as use the restroom or talk to somebody in another room.
However, they will still receive a notification and should see your message when they return.
What Does The Red Phone Icon Mean On Discord?
If the phone icon is red, this means that they have turned Do Not Disturb mode on, while using Discord on mobile.
When Do Not Disturb mode is on, you will still be able to tag them and send them messages. However, they will not receive any notifications about your messages – or any notifications from Discord at all, for that matter.
It is most commonly used when people are doing something important and do not want to be bothered by notifications. However, some people leave Do Not Disturb mode on permanently, and just check messages whenever its most convenient for them.
Keep in mind that you can mute servers to block notifications without needing to turn Do Not Disturb mode on – which can be a great alternative if you only want to block notifications from certain servers.
Anyhow, if you send a message to someone with Do Not Disturb mode on, they are still online – so they may see your message. However, because no notification is sent, it can take a significant amount of time before they may see it.
What Does The Phone Emoji (☎ 📞 or 📱) Mean On Discord?
This one is a little bit different!
If you see a phone emoji being used (rather than the mobile user phone icon next to their profile picture), it likely means that they’ve set a custom status. Custom statuses appear underneath their name rather than next to it, which is how you can recognize them.
Custom statuses on Discord can be set by clicking on your status icon in the bottom-left corner of Discord, and then clicking on ‘Set A Custom Status.’
You’ll then be able to type in some text for your custom status, and even include an emoji or custom icon to use with your custom status.
Anyhow, if you see a phone being used in a custom status, this may indicate that the person is currently on a phone call, or wants you to send them a text message instead of messaging them through Discord.
Or, it could just be random fun.
The best thing you can do is to ask them! Note that custom statuses may still show the phone icon mentioned earlier, if the person is also using the Discord app to access Discord.
