Although Ring doorbells are fantastic devices, they are not without their problems.
One of the features people love is the ability to adjust the volume of the doorbell. However, doing so isn’t exactly straightforward.
Thankfully, once you know where to look it can be done in just a few seconds.
In this article, we’ll cover everything that you need to know!
How To Adjust The Volume Of Your Ring Doorbell
Let’s look over the two different methods you can use to change the volume of your Ring doorbell. These methods should work for most Ring Doorbell models sold in recent years.
1. Using The Ring App
The first, and most straightforward option is to use the Ring doorbell app.
This is by far the best option if it’s available to you, because it is the only method that allows you full control over your Ring doorbell device. While Alexa can be used for simple commands, it’s not ideal, and takes a lot longer due to the limited controls.
Anyhow, to raise or lower the volume of your Ring doorbell via the Ring app, follow these steps:
- Open the Ring app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Open the Ring App menu, by tapping the button in the top-left corner.
- Tap on ‘Devices.’
- Choose your specific Chime device from the list of devices.
- Tap on the ‘Chime Tones’ option.
- Above or below the sounds, you should find a volume slider. Move this up or down to increase or decrease the volume.
When following the instructions above, you may not have found the button mentioned in Step 5 – “Tap on the ‘Chime Tones’ option.”
Don’t worry!
On a few specific Ring models, the exact location of the Chime Tones button may be in a different spot.
Therefore, you should follow these instructions instead:
- Open the Ring App and select your device.
- Tap on ‘Alert Settings.’
- Tap on ‘Chime Tones.’
- Adjust the volume using the slider.
2. Using Your Amazon Echo Device
The second way to change the volume of your Ring Doorbell is to use Alexa, via one of Amazon’s smart devices such as the Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Show.
This is less than ideal, but it can work if you don’t have access to the Ring Doorbell app.
Essentially, when using your Echo device in place of a Chime, the doorbell will always ring at the volume that your device is currently set at. This can be a problem, as it may not be loud enough.
So, what you want to do is set up an action / routine that is triggered by the doorbell being pressed. For example:
- The doorbell is pressed.
- Have the volume set to 10.
- Have some text read.
- Lower the volume back down to your typical Echo volume. When in doubt, something low like 4 or 5 can suffice.
Note that this will only affect the sound coming out of the Echo. It will not affect the volume that comes out of your doorbell if you talk to the person at the door via two-way communication, for example. This can only be adjusted through the Ring app.
Troubleshooting Tips
Unfortunately, things do not always go as smoothly as one may hope. Therefore, we’ve looked into some of the common issues that people face when adjusting the volume of their Ring doorbell, and shared some of the solutions that we’ve found.
1. The Doorbell Volume Doesn’t Actually Change
Despite adjusting the volume slider, there may be an issue if the volume of the doorbell doesn’t actually change, regardless of what setting you put it on.
First things first, you may want to adjust the volume more drastically in case you simply haven’t noticed the difference. This way, you can know whether or not its actually working.
However, what’s more common of an issue is that you may have forgotten to press the ‘save’ button after adjusting the volume. This will prevent it from actually updating. Instead, when you open the volume section again, it will be right back where it was originally!
Therefore, you should make sure to press the ‘Save’ button after your making adjustments.
Additionally, adjustments should be made when you have a stable connection to the internet. Both the Ring App as well as your Ring Doorbell operate over the internet, so without a stable internet connection the two cannot sync settings between each other.
If you experience any sort of error message when making changes, wait a few minutes and try again – after making sure the internet is working in your house, of course!
2. The Volume Slider Isn’t There
If you get to the final step and you do not see a volume slider, it can be quite alarming! Thankfully, there are things you can do to fix it.
First, you should try updating the app if an update is available, by checking for updates in your device’s App Store. This will usually solve any bugs like this one.
However, if you can’t get the slider to appear on your phone or tablet, you can also adjust the volume using your computer instead.
To adjust the volume of your Ring Doorbell on your desktop / laptop, follow these instructions:
- Visit Ring.com and sign in.
- Navigate to your devices.
- Select your specific Chime device.
- Go to Audio Settings, then Chime Tones.
- Adjust the volume.
Note that because Ring recently discontinued their desktop app and moved everything to their website, some features and functionality may be unavailable.
3. Help! Nothing Is Working!
If you’ve tried everything and your volume won’t change no matter what, unfortunately there isn’t much left you can do.
As a last resort, you should try completely reinstalling the Ring Doorbell, including the mobile app on your phone.
This will require you to pair the app with your device again, but it should fully reset everything.
Additionally, it will ensure that the latest version of the app is downloaded onto your device. This should include any bug fixes that may be affecting users such as yourself.
If reinstalling the app doesn’t work, we recommend contacting Ring / Amazon support for further help. They may be able to troubleshooting is causing the issue, and provide a fix that can help (or send you a new device, if yours is still under warranty.)
Conclusion
The volume of your Ring doorbell can be fully adjusted using the Ring App. You can make it softer or louder in just a few seconds, so this is the easiest way to adjust the volume of everything – from the volume of the Chime, to the volume of your voice during two-way communication or live view.
If you experience any issues, we recommend referencing the troubleshooting tips above to help you fix any issues.
