Do you have two or more Instagram accounts, that you’d like to merge together into one?

This is an excellent choice, and it’s a lot easier to focus on just one Instagram account than to divide your attention among several.

So, does Instagram allow you to merge two Instagram accounts together, and if so, how is it done?

In this article, I’ll cover everything that you need to know!

Can You Merge Two Instagram Accounts?

Instagram App

Currently, there is no ‘official’ way to merge Instagram accounts together – that is, there is no button in your settings that will allow this to be done.

However, not all hope is lost!

Just because Instagram doesn’t have any sort of official function for this, does not mean that it’s not still possible.

Although it takes a little more work, you can effectively achieve the same thing by following the steps I’ll be sharing with you in just a moment.

This process will still technically leave you with two separate accounts, but ultimately your followers and posts will be combined into the single account of your choosing.

So, it’s almost as good.

How To Combine Two Instagram Accounts Together

Because there’s no official method that takes care of the entire process for you, merging your two (or more accounts) will be a series of steps.

I will attempt to outline all necessary steps in order, so you can move through the process as quickly as possible.

However, the exact length of time can vary depending on how large your current accounts are, and how much work needs to be done.

So, let’s look over the steps now.

The Steps – How To Merge Your Instagram Accounts

1. Determine Which Account You Wish To Keep

First, decide which account you want to keep as your main account, and which accounts you want to merge into the main one.

Personally, I recommend keeping your largest account as your main, as this will reduce the amount of work you have to do going forward.

If you want the username of another account however, you can always change it later – so nothing is lost!

2. Download The Posts On Your Other Accounts

Request Data Download, Instagram

Once you’ve decided which accounts you want to get rid of, it’s time to download all of the posts that you’ve published on those accounts.

If you still have a copy of them on your phone or computer, then this step can be skipped. However, it will be a good idea to save a backup copy of everything regardless.

This can be done either by using software like 4K Stogram, or by requesting a copy of your Instagram data, which can be done by following these steps:

  1. Login to the Instagram account you want to download your data from, and visit your profile.
  2. Tap on the icon with three horizontal lines in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap on ‘Settings.’
  4. Type ‘Download’ into the search box.
  5. Tap on ‘Download Your data.’
  6. Enter your email address, and tap on the ‘Request download’ button.

Note that it may take up to two weeks for the data package to arrive. However, it will have all of your uploaded media in the .zip file that you’re sent.

3. Begin Deleting Media From The Old Profiles, And Uploading It To The New One

If you’d like your photos and videos to appear only on your new main profile, then consider this optional step.

First, delete the media from your older profile.

Then, reupload it on your new main profile.

Note that you shouldn’t immediately reupload all of your media at once, especially if you have a lot of it. Not only will the posts get low engagement, but Instagram may even consider it to be spamming as well.

So, slowly but consistently reupload the content, and eventually it will all be over on your main page!

4. Notify Old Followers Of The Change

Finally, it’s worth taking the time to let the followers on your old pages know about the change.

This can be done in three different ways.

The first is to directly DM your followers, and let them know about the new page that you’ll be moving the content to. In this message, let them know that you’ll no longer be active on your old account, and they should follow / message you on the new one if they wish to stay connected.

The second option is to upload a new photo on the old account, letting people know that you’ve moved.

This will likely be the first thing that they see when they go to visit your page, so it is a great way to capture their attention.

Finally, consider updating your bio letting people know, and link out to your new Instagram page.

Remember, the goal is to get as many of your followers to follow your new page as well, so you don’t lose anything by merging your accounts!

Why Merge Two Accounts?

As you can see, this is a bit more work – which is why we wish Instagram would just give us merging functionality already!

However, it can be motivating to understand the benefits that merging your accounts provides. If you know that you’re going to get something good out of it, it’s easier to push through all the work necessary to make it happen.

Personally, I feel that the biggest benefit is that it’s so much easier to manage one account, then handling multiple accounts at once.

You are able to focus all of your growth and posting onto just one account, meaning all of your energy is going to the same place. You don’t have to decide which page to post something on, and all of that focused energy means that your singular page actually ends up growing much faster, than posting content on separate pages.

It’s also much better for followers, because they’re able to know exactly where to find all of your content, rather than having to chase it down across multiple Instagram handles.

Finally, using one account means that all of your notifications are in one place. This means that you don’t have to constantly switch accounts to see all of your notifications.

It also makes much easier to respond to followers and comments left on your post, in addition to being able to see all of your DMs on one page.

All-in-all, it makes your Instagram experience a lot smoother, and prevents unnecessary hassles that come with running multiple accounts.

Conclusion

Although there is no official way to fully merge multiple Instagram accounts together, you can effectively achieve the same thing by following the steps above.

While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to retain all of your followers, you should be able to combine most of your following without any issues.

Of course, if you have any questions, ask them below and I’ll be happy to help.
