Are you planning a shopping trip to Target, and want to know if they’ll accept your large bills?

While many stores refuse to accept $50 (and especially $100) bills, big-box retailers like Target are generally more accommodating.

So, does Target accept $50 and $100 bills? What about at self-checkout? And if not, what other payment methods does Target accept?

In this article, I’ll be answering all of these questions and more!

Does Target Accept $100 Bills?

Target Store

Yes! I am happy to confirm that all Target locations accept $100 bills, and it’s corporate policy for them to do so. I verified this information by calling several different Target stores across the country, as well as speaking to Target employees that process $100 bills daily.

Paying with $100 bills at Target is such a common occurrence, that all staff are equipped to handle them without any issues, and shouldn’t have any problem providing change.

That being said, there are a few situations where a $100 bill may not be accepted, which I’ll cover a bit later.

Generally speaking however, you don’t need to worry – even if you only have a $100 bill to pay with, Target should be able to provide change for you – even if you are only making a small purchase!

Does Target Accept $50 Bills?

Now that we know that Target accepts $100 bills, it’s probably unsurprising to hear that they accept $50 bills as well.

Again, this is something that Target cashiers deal with regularly, so it won’t be any issue at all to pay with a $50 bill.

This is true even if you are only purchasing a single item, or you’re only stopping by Target so you can split the bill before shopping somewhere else.

Do Target Self-Checkouts Accept $50 Or $100 Bills?

So far, we’ve covered situations where you’re dealing with a cashier at a register. But what if you want to checkout yourself at a self-checkout station? Will you still be able to use large bills?

Thankfully, you can!

Like while paying at a register, it’s Target policy to accept all bill denominations for your purchase. Thankfully, this extends to self-checkout stations as well.

Self-checkout stations will also be equipped with enough cash to provide change, even when using a $100 bill on a small purchase.

So, don’t worry – your money will be accepted!

When Does Target NOT Accept $50 / $100 Bills?

Because it’s Target’s policy to accept $100 bills – as well as $50 bills, there are only two situations where this wouldn’t be possible.

The first is if the register you’re attempting to check out at simply doesn’t have enough change to accept your bill. I’ve been told by Target employees that this is incredibly rare, and only might become an issue if your purchase is incredibly small (such as purchasing a single, cheap item.)

Even when this happens, you’ll usually be redirected to another register that has the necessary change available, rather than being told that you’ll need to use smaller bills. Many Target locations also have an ATM, so you can always use that if it’s truly necessary.

The other situation is if Target has reason to believe that your bill may be counterfeit.

That being said, cashiers should be equipped with the tools and training necessary to check this. It is very rarely a problem, and not something you need to worry about.

What Other Payment Methods Does Target Accept?

If you’re reconsidering paying with cash, Target does accept a number of other payment methods as well! These include:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover Card
  • Most major debit cards
  • Most major credit cards
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • Samsung Pay
  • Checks
  • WIC (in authorized stores only)
  • EBT Cards (for eligible items.)
  • PayPal (online only.)
  • Target gift cards.

So, you certainly have a lot of options! Note that when paying with an eligible payment option, you are also able to receive up to $40 cash back. This can be another way to get some smaller bills in your wallet, without having to split a $50 or $100 bill.

Conclusion

All Target stores accept both $50 as well as $100 bills, and you should never have a problem using one within a Target store.

Therefore, they’re also a great option to split a $100 bill, without having to make a trip out to your bank!
