A microphone can be a wonderful investment as it opens you up to both better audio and video content. Even when focusing primarily on video, in most cases improving audio offers a better overall experience than improving only video. Given how cheap some really good microphones are, I’d say it’s definitely worth it.

A lot of the equipment in this article has pretty good resale value as well, so as you point out you can always invest more over time as you grow.
