Hi Lisa, that’s an excellent question!

While I’m not quite sure of the specifics off the top of my head, I think the two things are sort of separate – modern iPhones are able to charge their battery with wireless (taking power in), but have no way to share that power (or send power out.)

I know there are Android phones capable of this, though. It would be neat if they were able to support the 2nd generation Apple Pencil in the future!
